Is a custom airgun the right choice for you?
by:  Diamus

Owning, let alone building, a custom airgun is not for everyone. There are a lot of choices to be made with respect to a customized airgun. There are several approaches to take, from buying a completed unit, to putting your own together one piece at a time, to building your own from scratch. Most people don't have the tools or experience to build their own from scratch and buying one completed can be expensive. If you buy a completed one you live with someone else's choices. If the choices made were good ones, great, you'll end up with an airgun that will bring you pleasure to shoot and years of good service.

It is important to start with an airgun that lends itself to the modification process. The more flexible the initial design, the more freedom you have to make the gun what you want it to be. Choose a make and model that is easy to take apart and reassemble. If you don't have the tools to make the modifications yourself, make sure to pick an airgun that others offer kits or services for. Pick an airgun that fits the final purpose you intend it to be used for. No sense in modifying a gun that will never do what you want.

Once you have chosen an airgun to modify, you can start planning the process. Planning what you want is very important. If you make decisions along the way that don't have the end goal in mind you run the risk of making mistakes that could be costly. Investigate what others are doing with this airgun or ones that are similar. The internet is probably the best resource available to most people. There are discussion groups that are focused on airguns and making modifications to them. There are websites that offer products and services for modifying your airgun.

It is recommended that the modification process be approached slowly. If you proceed too fast you can end up having to repair or replace parts, or all, of your airgun. Custom items are usually something you want to be proud of. Take your time and do the best possible work you can. Small steps seem to take longer but usually yield better results and less mistakes.

Airgunning is a great family hobby. Children and adults alike can enjoy shooting airguns. Individuals that are intimidated by firearms can even enjoy shooting airguns. Creating a modified airgun can be a wonderful learning experience for kids. The process teaches design, science, metal and woodworking skills, among other things.

Most of all, enjoy yourself. For most people this is a hobby, and hobbies are supposed to bring you pleasure and fulfillment. So sit back, envision your custom airgun finished and enjoy yourself.

Target Tip

Shooting Game

Use coins to create a shooting gallery. Drill a small hole in each coin and hang from a board with heavy fishing line. Each coin is worth its value in points, misses are worth $1. Lowest score wins.
